Capped Bust Quarter (1815 - 1838)

General Grading Standards
1815 - 1828

  • AG3 Almost Good - Details clear enough to identify.
  • G4 Good - Date, letters, and stars readable. Hair under headband smooth. Cap lines worn smooth.
  • VG8 Very Good - Rim well defined. Main details visible. Full LIBERTY on cap. Hair above eye nearly smooth.
  • F12 Fine - All hairlines show but drapery has only part details. Shoulder clasp distinct.
  • VF20 Very Fine - All details show, but some wear. Clasp and ear sharp.
  • EF40 Extremely Fine - All details show distinctly. Hair well outlined.
  • AU50 About Uncirculated - Slight trace of wear on tips of curls and above the eye, and on the wing and claw tips.
  • MS60 Uncirculated - No trace of wear. Light blemishes.
  • MS63 Select Uncirculated - Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster may be impaired.

1831 - 1838

  • G4 Good - Bust well defined. Hair under head band smooth. Date, letters, stars readable. Scant rims.
  • VG8 Very Good - Details apparent but worn on high spots. Rims strong. Full LIBERTY.
  • F12 Fine - All hairlines visible. Drapery partly worn. Shoulder clasp distinct.
  • VF20 Very Fine - Only top spots worn. Clasp sharp. Ear distinct.
  • EF40 Extremely Fine - Hair details and clasp are bold and clear.
  • AU50 About Uncirculated - Slight trace of wear on hair around the forehead and on the cheek and at the top and bottom tips of eagle's wings and left claw.
  • MS60 Uncirculated - No trace of wear. Light blemishes.
  • MS63 Select Uncirculated - Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster may be impaired.
