I'm a newbie. I just bought a few rolls from the bank today. I have a bunch of quarters (like 1973 and 1978) with no mint marks. What's the deal with that?

Thanks

Those quarters are from the Philadelphia mint and the P MM wasn't added until 1980.

Thanks Fuzzy317. So basically most quarters 1965-1979 were minted in Philadelphia?

I don't know the numbers per mint facility, but there may be years more dominate from one facility or the other.

On a slightly different thought, in 1922 all cents were made at the Denver mint. Some may be missing the MM due to bad dies.

Check these numbers on another section of CCF (page down a little)

San Francisco began coining in 1965 and struck cents through halves in 65 and 66 and cents through quarters in 67. All of these were struck with no mintmarks.

And that includes coins that were minted at West Point during those years. The low mintage of SF and WP coins is one of the reasons that mint marks were not used. The mint did not want the coins to be collected, they wanted them to circulate.
