Hi to all. New to the forum and first post. I was going through a box of old coins my dad had collected over his lifetime and I found a strange looking 1940 nickle. I have uploaded pictures. Can anyone tell me if this is an error coin? or did something else happen to this coin during its life after it left the mint? Thanks!

Someone hit it with a pipe and hammer, see arrows. Notice the denticles on the opposite side are all smashed too from the downward strike of PMD

Thanks for the reply! I suspected as much, but had to ask.

I don't think it was a pipe and hammer.
It looks more like it was run through something tool resembling the cutter and toothed wheel of a can opener.
