i have found a 1954 nickel that is dark, almost tarnished looking on both sides of the coin. I photographed it alone with another 1950's coin for color comparison. the two coins were shot in the same image and then seperated, to get them down to the size requirement to post them here. is this just a normal discolored coin or is there some other explimation for the darker coin. thanks.
A black nickel that is uncirculated and retains original mint luster was probably struck on an improperly annealed planchet. Prolonged exposure to the heat of the annealing oven, or a rise in oxygen levels, can produce this effect.
