i have found a 1954 nickel that is dark, almost tarnished looking on both sides of the coin. I photographed it alone with another 1950's coin for color comparison. the two coins were shot in the same image and then seperated, to get them down to the size requirement to post them here. is this just a normal discolored coin or is there some other explimation for the darker coin. thanks.

First thought was "war nickel" as those are often dark... but date rules that out of course.

My guess would be a metal detector find.

i've found a few black, and brown ones during my search.. and I remember seeing at least one post on CCF of someone who's putting together an album with nothing but black nickels

i've got a '92-P right in front of me that looks just like it, no clue how they get this way, but they are interesting

A black nickel that is uncirculated and retains original mint luster was probably struck on an improperly annealed planchet. Prolonged exposure to the heat of the annealing oven, or a rise in oxygen levels, can produce this effect.

Just curious if there is a way to intentionally color nickels black. My younger brother loves finding these, and I'd like to "make" him some black nickels for his birthday

Thanks all
