I have a coin that I would really like to know about! Not sure what the writing on it means, but it is spelled. (Front)= has what looks like a man with a halo wearing a cross around his neck, and has an x across his body with the words = (CLETTENB DO IN LORA E ) On the rear it has a crest with the words= ( ERNESTVS COM D HONSTEIN ) Please help! any info would be greatly appreciated Edited my Moderator to remove email address

It does indeed appear to be a thaler from the German state of Hohstein, like the one in the CoinArchives link above (CoinArchives links expire after a few months, so I'm repeating the information it says there: Schulten 183a, Dav. 9318, 28.69g). Schulten and "Dav" (Davenport) are catalogue references. If genuine, it's certainly worth at least a few hundred dollars.
So, is it genuine? That depends; it's hard to be sure from those pictures. It's not normal to "find" 400 year old thalers just lying about the place. Can we ask the circumstances of how it was found?
A couple of quick tests can put our minds at ease. First, get a magnet and see if it sticks. If it does, its definitely fake. Next, check the weight. The one on CoinArchives weighed 28.69 grams; if yours is significantly lighter or heavier than that, it's definitely fake.

Sorry, forgot to tell you how it was found! Short version, I found it in my parents driveway in florida when I was about 13. (it was semi buried ) I'm 43 now. Only GOD knows how it got there. it also has an( 8 )and( Z )on the side of each foot, is that the date of the coin by chance?

If those symbols signify the date then it's more like 8 & 2 for 1582.

mrrepii- out of curiosity, about where in Florida did you find this coin? Because there of course were certain areas of settlement by the Spanish. So it is possible that you may have found a coin from a small hoard buried by a Spaniard or Catalan.

I had the coin weighed today. It weighs 28.34g. And the man there told me it really looks genuine, ( something about air bubbles in the metal, if that means anything to you guys! ) I found it in the East Ft.Myers area. I may go back there with my metal detector, it has been 30 years since I found it though. Maybe some others have washed up since then. ( you really got me thinking about it now though! )
