Poll Question:

With the less than 36 hour sellout and issuance of only 50,000, the value of the Lincoln Coin and Chronicles set immediately shot up to the $150-175 range on Ebay with some pre-sales going for over $200. According to the US Mint, there were only 1,000 oversales so there is probably not going to be a huge increase in demand once cancellations are issued so the peak prices are probably here now.

I saw an opportunity to make a nice little chunk of change that could be used to fund other coin purchases so I put my set on Ebay. It sat there for several days with a $149.95 BIN. Last night, based upon the falling final values, I lowered the BIN to $129.95 and went to bed- it lasted one hour at that price. When I saw the results of that this morning, I felt like I had just given up a kid for adoption I can't help but have thoughts of possibly "leaving money on the table" if the price does bump back up a little but I will be looking pretty smart if it continues to slide towards the $100 level. Whats done is done, I have been paid so obviously I cannot have second thoughts about it now. I really did like the appearance of the set and it would have made a nice addition to my collection but I would have had to replace the Log Cabin cent due to spotting issues. All I can do now is plan on what I intend to purchase next with the proceeds(most of it will be going to Harlan J. Berk this evening).

How many others sold their sets and how much did you get for it? Was anyone conflicted about selling like I was? Who has decided to make this set part of their permanent collection? What are your thought on the future of this set?

Choices:

Sell
Hold
Got multiples, kept one and sold others
Undecided

You should add a few catagories to the poll. I voted Hold, but ordered two sets, so my vote should be hold 1, undecided on other(s).

I sold one set for $70. Guy was a WWII vet who missed the mint sale date. I'd sell my other set for $100 or will keep it.

I wasn't really looking to make money on these. I like the set and will keep it or sell it cheap.

Now gold is a different story.

Thanks for the suggestion jgfindring, that was something I hadn't quite thought about but it does seem that a few here got more than one.

I plan on holding on to mine. I'm really impressed with this set. I am kicking myself for not ordering one in my wife's name with her parent's address. I would have tried to sell that one.

i voted sell the same thing happened with me I had a buy it now of $149.00 and had no takers I dropped it to 130.00 and it was gone in a few hours. I liked the appearance of the set as well I planned to keep one of the 2 sets I bought but my thinking was I already had the proof cents and a proof and uncirculated dollar so really I was only keeping the set for the packaging and copy of the gettysburg address I thought to myself I collect coins not the package they come in so I decided to sell both.

i think in my opinion the sets will continue to fall because I think a lot of people may have already had the coins that came in the set and will decide to sell for the same reason I did.

as for what I got for them I got $130.00 for the buy it now and I have one for auction up right now on the bay with 2 hours left sitting at $129.00

I have a slightly different angle, I placed my order and had 4-family members do the same.
I now have 5-sweet Lincoln Coin and Chronicles sets, I never intended to sell any, I do not sell (anymore) coins or currency, I collect coins, comm's, currency, and special sets for my collection to do as I see fit to do, when I want to.

I think these sets will drop in price but will ( I hope ) always hold a special premium, based on what it is and the demand it creates. What will I do with these sets, well for one, they are good trading attractions, being the mintage was only 50,000 for the set, although all the coins in said set, were available earlier and some other 450,000 coins - 325,000 Proofs and 125,000 Uncirculated Lincoln Silver Dollars are out there and the Proof-2009, 4-coins Cents are also still for sale.

All said, I just thought the set would be nice to have an extra or two and actually, I would love to see the sets hold a nice premium and slowly climb to where it belongs, up, up, up....

PS: I think people who did sell, those who did so asap, I think did better, what exactly the future holds or will bring, we will see......Can you imagine what the coin channel will be selling this set for!

I was lucky enough to get 5 of these beauties. Sold 2 and I am holding onto the rest for awhile.

Even though you can get all of the other coins in different sets. I believe that won't make a difference on what premiums for this set will be. It's pure speculation on my part, but I think this set has a better chance of realizing values of 3-500 then issue price in the next 5 yrs or so.

I bought 2 of these with the intention to sell both. I don't like to fool with selling on ebay so I consigned both sets with Susan. I had hoped they would sell in the $160 range but it looks like they will go for less tham that. I'll still make a few dollars & so will the forum owners so I'm satisfied.

I have the cents from the proof set & don't care for the dollar. To be 100% honest, I think it's a little silly for fancy packaging to be valued for more than the coins could be bought for.

Well.....for Fifty some bucks.....it "is" a good deal....packaging or no, IMHO.
I don't live in the "buy, sell, trade" world of coin collecting.....I only buy...(so far .. )
I know Bio has these coins individually too ! (as do I)
But, the "profit in money" for selling this Set, doesn't outweigh how sweet this "packaging" is for me !
I wouldn't want the money from the sale of this Set (at least under $200.00) to buy other coins.....because I love "this" particular Set that much....... It's all about Abe.....and it's all in one Set and intact with beautiful packaging to boot !

Because of the ample mintage of the coins in the Set being easily acquired individually, this Set won't likely ever see REALLY high prices in the ten to twenty year future window...... and maybe not even in my lifetime, I believe. (really needed an "S" mintmark on that Lincoln !)
I got two Sets, which are now in the Safety Deposit Boxes at the bank. But, although I was super excited to watch the predicted "price frenzy"......I was never "conflicted" on whether I would sell one or not, I would just have enjoyed watching to see how high they got before the "bubble burst" and then flat line somewhere around $100.00 bucks. (which is still great !)
These Sets will be a part of my permanent collection, but, as I've mentioned before, I reserve the right to, once I'm old and decrepit, sell any of my "doubles or triples" of coin materials to "make ends meet", were that to be needed at that future point in time.
Now, the future wife, I fear, may not want to wait exactly THAT long ! .....

So.....anyway.....no.....I was never "tempted" to sell......just excited to watch !
