There's always the possibility (if they were customer wrapped rolls) that you are buying somebody elses dump rolls. There are alot of people searching half dollar rolls. As a general rule when I go to a bank I have never been to or rarely go to and ask for half dollars, I let the teller ask me "how many do you want"? Then I reply with "how many do you got"? I then make a decision based on how many rolls they have. If they have over $400.00 worth I am pretty sure It's a dump bank and only buy around 5 rolls and go outside and look through them. If any silver or proofs show up then I'll go back and buy the rest. If not, then I go to another bank. If I have alot of money on that particular day and it's getting close to time to head back to the house, I might buy them and gamble. Either way I try to dump my rolls farthest away from my regular search area as possible.

coinyungsta, $100 is only 10 half dollar rolls. That's not a large number of searched rolls to try to find some goodies. It's a numbers game so keep looking. Ratman, where do you live where you can decide whether or not to accept half rolls? Here in south Fl, I'm only successful about 10% of the times I ask to actually find a bank that has any. Must be nice.

I'm in NC and the city I live pretty near to has alot of searchers and dumpers. The smaller towns like the one I live in I don't have that problem...I take any and all I can get. I dump my half dollars in the city and often find them scattered all over the place at other banks when I try to buy from different banks.

Ratman while I completely agree that when you see a bank with over 400 dollars worth it is probably a dump bank, I would try asking for maybe 60 dollars worth and see what they give you (customer wrapped or double crimped). Today I went to a BoA and they had 600 dollars in the vault and 1 of the 7 I bought was a lot of silver in it. I went back and asked if they had any other rolls that looked like it lol and got another roll of a lot of silver.
You never know though.

Motos, I agree that there may be a roll or two with silver that somebody else may have turned in...that's why I buy a smpling of 5 or so. If I plan on hitting other banks before I go to my dump bank, I don't want to spend all my cash on what most likely will be junk. If it's my last stop before my dump stop then I'll buy all I can and see.

Buy em all then move on to next bank - I have been known to search the rolls as I drive to the next bank. If I'm out on a road trip I'll even walk into a bank with the searched rolls, ask for half dollars then dump the searched ones there. Never have I been turned down and I will tell them I am a coin collector.

I just stumbled upon 40 rolls of westward journey nickels myself from a bank. Most were String & Sons Wrapped Keelboat & a couple of Buffalo But there were about a dozen mint wrapped rolls.
