Ever notice how the ppl who get 45+mpg can tell you their mpg to three decimal prices, while the folks getting 10-12mpg prolly can't tell you within 2mpg?
Yeah, Fredd, there IS a lesson there. Those who get 10-12 mpg probably don't care what their mileage is and those who get 45 mpg probably bought that vehicle specifically to get that mileage. Yes, there is probably a general lessen here as well.
I always felt the time to be worried about mpg is when buying a new vehicle. Then you maintain it properly and spend your remaining time on something more reproductive.
