Nice to see that I went through a hefty amount of trouble to have this result in exactly what I said NOT to do. I hope for your benefit they don't chose to make an example out of you and confiscate your counterfeit...but you cannot say you were not warned.

Gosh I am really sorry that you felt like commenting on my post was so much trouble. I feel like you educated a lot of folks as well as myself. And yes, I would be very upset if they kept my coin, they told me they do not do that sort of thing. There has to be an element of trust in sending in any coin, right?
Why comment on any post if you find it so troubling. Not everyone in this world thinks or acts alike. That's why I have enjoyed reading all the postings. Please do not belittle my decision just because it is not yours. You would not be an expect in your field if everyone had your knowledge or made the same decisions that you make. You would be their equal. You may know a lot about coins but I happen to know a lot about people and human behavior. That's my "expert" thing!
I am grateful for everyone's postings and have expressed that. I really think everyone would be disappointed if I didn't have a 3rd party grading. You can say "told you so" and everyone else that had a different opinion is rooting for me! It's a win win situation. Stay tuned. I am really enjoying this!

Only the newbies would be disappointed..the rest of us know the experts that answered have given an opinion that far outweighs what an unknown worker at a TPG will give you. As they say..you can lead a horse to water..but you can't make him drink

It's really not that it was "so much trouble" - but I did spend quite a bit of time trying to discourage you from sending the piece to anyone, because there is exactly and precisely ZERO percent chance that it is a real coin. It's a waste of time and money to send it to anyone, and it puts you and the coin in the precarious situation that you could never see it again...and I know that since it came from a family member, it could be quite a discouraging note to have it confiscated.

It is fake, there is no doubt, and there is no need for a grading company to look at it, because they will NOT put it in a holder. It is a counterfeit coin - end of story.

In any event, let us know what ANACS says. Typically the major TPGs note these as "Questionable Authenticity". Don't let this, or a similar phrase, give you any hope that they didn't know for sure and called it "questionable".

For a TPG to return it to you, they cannot say flat-out "counterfeit" or they would be legally liable. To avoid this potential issue, counterfeit coins are "named" something other than "counterfeit". I thought you should know this in advance.

Some folks learn from others' experience.

Some have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.

Here is what I hope doesn't happen...they said THEY won't keep the coin if it is fake, BUT, they didn't say who they would give it back to! Let's hope it isn't the Secret Service!

Good evening! I am having so much fun tonight going through my coins. I think I am officially obsessed with finding a good/great coin. Tonight while going through my Wheaties I found a 1914-D and a 1909-S VDB. I am going to my first coin show this Friday and hope to have several coins lined up for grading. I have not heard back about the 1943 copper coin yet but am waiting with baited breathe. Loving this hobby!!

It might be ironic if they sent it to Chuck or Mike for a look, but either way good luck and good learning experience

A box of Wheaties? (cereal)
A roll of Wheaties? (you bought on eBay?)
Were they in a Jar...

I personally would make another thread for these 2 coins with pictures instead of Hijacking this thread...I'd like to see them.

Thanks and Happy Hunting

No body is rooting for you. This is not a situation where if you just gave it your all and tried a little hard you could make the coin real. The coin is what it is and it is just your knowledge of it that will change.

I have not been on this forum that long (you can check my post count and days I've been a member), but I have been here long enough to see the endless rotation of people that show up and post how they found something and want people to take a look at it. It is usually just post mint damage, a counterfeit coin, etc.

Not long ago there was a post where a woman posted a dime that had been sanded down on one side. She was angry and used rather vulgar language with the people that tried to tell her it wasn't worth more than ten cents.

You seem to think it is a battle of wills and that the people here are going to get some kind of buzz when they will be able to say "I told you so!" That is not the case. Many of them have seen this countless times. It is more like a father telling a child in a patient but amused tone than it is a bunch of jr. high kids shouting their opponents down when they are right.

If you stick around here long enough I can almost guarantee that in the next year one or two more noobs will join the forum with an other "possible real 1943 copper penny!?" You are not the first in my short time here. Then you will look at their pictures and think I know this is not real because of [...]. Then you will be accused not not rooting for the noob, or something...

Any way, watching the tread and hope it doesn't ruin your love of coins.

I do not think it is really possible to hijack your own thread, so do not sweat it; we were all new at one point.
