Just curious to what your oldest coins are and to which civilizations or cultures it belonged to. Personally my oldest coin is an Ancient Greek Silver Diobol Coin - Thrace, Messambria "META", Dates back to 450-350 BC. Obverse: Facing helmet Reverse: META within the spokes of a radiate wheel Diameter: 10.5 mm Weight: 1.14 g Here is a picture of it:  |

If that is your oldest coin, it seems you are collect US coins only? |

1801 Large Cent. Someday I'll get a nice pre-1800 large cent for my collection but I haven't seen too many that have the look that I want and won't decimate my budget. BTW only collecting U.S. coins at the moment but I'm tempted by ancient Roman coins.  Edited by Joe2007

My oldest dated coin is the 1504 Hungarian denar that is in the "how far back can we go" thread. I have a few undated ones with the oldest being 1492/93.

1625. I only collect British coins. In fact shillings of Charles I, of which this is from the first issue. Struck at the Tower of London (the location of The Royal Mint in those days). Charles was executed at the end of the English Civil War and soon after the monarchy was restored machinery took over the production of coinage from the centuries-old hand hammered process.  |

My oldest is a copper Constatius II denarius from the 3rd century AD. It is my only ancient coin as I don't collect ancients and only got this because it was 50% off ($7). My oldest US coin in a 1833 VF-30 Bust Half. My oldest European is a 1627 3 groschen from Austria. Oldest Canadian is a 1858 20 Cent coin. My favourite old coin is my 1758 VF-30 Britain Shilling. (Sorry no pictures)

For now, it's this 1745 shilling, because I buy almost everything from either junk bins or melt buckets. But I'm hoping to buy some medieval silver from either Germany or Austria.  |

My oldest currently is an 1802 Large Cent. It's my only large cent so far, and it's actually quite worn down - It was marked as dateless at the shop. I found that it takes some fiddling with lighting to even read what you can of the date, but there's just enough visible to tell the year. It's probably a Fair-2 or AG-3, but I got it for $14.
Don't own any medieval coins yet, but I'd love to get a penny from Alfred the Great's reign and Cnut's reign.
