Can DDD be seen on pre Single Squeeze Dies? the die wear is common on both, but the fields are affected on the Single squeeze dies first and not the devices. On the higher profile coins, the devices that face the rim move towards the rim. http://goccf.com/t/431072#3706244 How close does hub doubling need to be a match to be from the same die? exactly the same. (excluding die wear on class 2 doubled dies) http://goccf.com/t/430957#3706268Can coins be damaged at the mint? yes, but when this happens you can send in soon to get a replacement. But after a few weeks, it is too later to get a replacement. Not a desirable coin. (as far a I know) http://goccf.com/t/431070#3706283What caused the devices to fill into the rim on the 1968 cents? a swelling master hub was the issue. fixed in 1969 with a new, new master hub http://goccf.com/t/431140#3706698What is a die event? events that happen during the dies life. some can be rescued, others can't http://goccf.com/t/431150#3706720

How to tell the RDV-005 and RDV-006 dies on the 1988 reverse cents? mintmark and AME areas will look different. easiest way is to look at the AME areas. (rounded or flat?) http://goccf.com/t/431192#3707210What causes the movement of metal on devices on 1943 cents to move towards the closest rims? extreme die wear. steel planchets made the dies wear down faster than the copper planchets. http://goccf.com/t/431188#3707226What is a swelling master hub? the master hub was the creator of the dies/hubs it would create. one problem would make all the coins with the same problem. http://goccf.com/t/431173#3707232

@coop, I'm making this thread sticky so that it will stay at the top of this subforum. There is a ton of good information in here and this will help others to find it all.

How do I know I have a SMS nickel? 1st: chances are they are not found in circulation. special sets given to some mint employees. Probably less that 100. http://goccf.com/t/431490#3710409What dies a partial collar coin look like? outer edge of coin not in the collar will be showing enlargement wider that the rest of the edge of the coin http://goccf.com/t/431518#3710423How do I know I have a Rim Cud? the area with the a broken gutter will show taller on the rim, thus higher on that area http://goccf.com/t/431519#3710429 Why are some areas of the design weaker on some dies? polished dies will show weakness or even smaller sized devices. these are die events. on some strikes the devices maybe larger than normal in size. these are from a striking issue with grease in the die. so the devices will be larger in size than normal, but the same width of the base as normal. these are also common to find, unless a lot of the design is missing http://goccf.com/t/431515#3710436What is a die clash, does it rotate or double, or more? yes, yes, yes and yes http://goccf.com/t/431520#3710462Where there part Silver nickels? type 2 1943-1945 nickels, mintmark over the building http://goccf.com/t/431533#3710467What makes a coin weigh less than normal? reduced thickness of the planchet. not seen often, I wonder if they flatten the edge of the beginning of the rolls, making these planchets thinner on just that area of the blanks?http://goccf.com/t/431498#3710480

MAD = (Mis-Aligned-Die) Spelling can make a difference. How could something inanimate be mad? Thus the caps on that term. DDO, DDR, RPM are just a few of the Caps we use to Identify a certain coin event. Thus MAD would be the correct term, rather than Mad. How does grease affect the strike on a coin? it prevents the strike up of the devices. more grease, less devices are seen. look for the wider base of the devices. http://goccf.com/t/431625#3711676What is a die event? How does this affect the coins struck with that die? die age. as they age, they receive damage. that damage is removed by die polishing. When this happens the coins will be affected when struck with this die with previous die events. this a normal part of life for a die. http://goccf.com/t/431574#3711688

How is spread, different than a Grease Fill and circulation flattening? flattening enlarges devices and grease strikes prevent the tapered areas of the devices to appear. Die wear is distorted more towards the closest rim direction. http://goccf.com/t/431695#3712124

What is the differences between a Doubled die, A normal coin and Machine Doubling? spread on doubled dies, normal sized devices on normal coins and reduced contour on Machine Doubling. don't forget to use your glasses on these images to see even more. http://goccf.com/t/431788#3713240Difference between a Lamination and Struck through debris errors? size and shape differences. http://goccf.com/t/431881#3713605Can more than one issue affect a coin at the same time? yes. note the DDD and also the Machine Doubling is affecting this coin. on another coin could could have all three, but not on this example it is a normal coin affected by DDD and Machine Doubling. http://goccf.com/t/431854#3713609What will help me see doubled dies easier? seeing side by sides that show hub doubling (doubled die) and a normal die. the side by side will help to see the spread easier on a doubled die. Seeing is understanding. http://goccf.com/t/431743#3713658Why do lamination errors happen? cold metal rolled on to a hot sheet of metal, will adhere for a time. but a later can fall off the coin or hang onto the coin. depending on the heat of the hot roll temps. http://goccf.com/t/431827#3713659

Should a die crack affect the rim on a coin on a cracked die? no. The step down on the gutter should not show a die crack. (coin scratches will show that area affected, with in incuse line) http://goccf.com/t/431937#3714128Quarter Die clashes given a Gimmick cute name to sell them. they are really just die clashes http://goccf.com/t/431934#3714155What is the difference between a Struck through error and coin damage? beginning and ending of the affected area seen incuse on the coins surface http://goccf.com/t/431931#3714184How can I tell a 1972 cent DDO-003 from a -DDO-008? note the differences on their hub doubling http://goccf.com/t/431954#3714199What do you mean: "Distorted Devices?" slight movement of the hub altered the devices on this area during die creation, making this a doubled die on that area of the design on these quarters. hub doubling on the die mark makes that die a doubled die http://goccf.com/t/431854#3714220Can Machine Doubling be different from strike to strike? yes and it does happen differently because of the looseness of that machine. http://goccf.com/t/431808#3714230
