No need for the "g" to describe the lion's "mane." It doesn't appear to be inflicted with mange.

: )
True, no mange in the mane!

Venetian Soldino from time of Doge Francesco Dandolo, who ruled from 1329-1339, a few years before the outbreak of the Black Death and features the Lion of St. Mark. This little guy saw so many crazy things while in circulation!!
The soldino is .67 silver-I wonder what the rest of the metal content is.
Fun Fact: A Doge's wife is called a Dogaressa!

New Zeland Mint released one today, Fierce Nature - Lion 2oz Silver Coin. This fantastic 2oz pure silver coin showcases a grand presentation of a lion's head, with his mouth open wide, issuing his message of warning. It is fully engraved and antiqued to enhance the features of the King of the Jungle. As legal tender, the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II can be found on the obverse. The engraving along the bottom guarantees it is 2oz of .999 fine silver.

Lions are very popular on coinage, and are present all over British coinage. Here's one that is fascinating.

Lydian electrum trite (4.71g, 13x10x4 mm). This coin type, made of a gold and silver alloy, was in all likelihood the world's first, minted by King Alyattes in Sardis, Lydia, Asia Minor (present-day Turkey), c. 610-600 BC. It can be attributed, among other ways, as Weidauer 59-75(Type 15).

I cannot find a picture of the other side of that coin, so we'll have to settle for this;-
