I do not think it is an RPM.

If you look at the date, you will see the same thing. That is Machine Doubling. The other areas inside of the curved areas of the mintmark, are mintmark punch damage. Note the real deal shows them as well, and they are not part of the RPM:

hwbfresh, I found some information I believe will help answer your questions at https://board.conecaonline.org/foru...1-1974-s-rpm

Turns out, the San Francisco mint actually punched the 'S' mint Mark of both proof and business strike coins using a broken mint mark punch that had been originally been made/used 32 years earlier on 1940s-1950s San Francisco minted coins. In 1974 when the punch that was being used broke, they must not have had time to make a new one I guess, because they ended up using the old degraded punch they had on hand to punch the 'S' onto multiple denominations minted in San Francisco in 1974. Hope this helps. &

Dr. Wiles who first cataloged the MMS varieties has confirmed that what he originally noted as the MMS-004, and the MMS-009 are indeed punched using the exact same mint mark punch, over 30 years apart. The only difference is on the 1974s the split serif appears due to further and continued degradation of the punch itself, but Dr. Wiles has confirmed the finding and agreed to update his listings.

Very cool that you know this, GoonieGirl80 and to the forum. I've posted these findings a few times but it has not caught on yet, thanks for bringing it to the forefront.
