A friend came across this nickel in a bucket of change yesterday. We've been trying to find some info on it including value. It is a 2014 P Jefferson nickel, 6 steps on Monticello and COPPER! Can anyone tell me anything about this coin? Is it a fluke?   |

Interested in knowing an accurate weight. Sadly, those circulation nicks on the steps compromised any FS designation (in my opinion).

discoloration is usually due to environmental damage, but it's typically not as uniform as this, so other info like weight would be helpful

I texted my friend, she did weigh it. 5 grams exactly.

Well the weight is spot on for what it should weigh, so I think this coin is just heavily toned or was buried at some point

Well first of all I do not see any steps at all . As far as the color I have to admit I'm stumped . The even all around brown is very odd . I'm going to say not a fake coin , not plated , not a dirt find , not painted , and not any kind of environmental issue .

If I had to take a guess I'd say a fountain nickel, sitting around a bunch if cents in a fountain with chemicals.

What chemicals could bring the Ni red-brown? no idea as I'm not a chemist  I do know I have a loonie with even darker colouring then this and have seen nickels with a dark tone like this. If in a fountain I imagine chlorine and maybe a few other chemicals. Other wise no clue.
