1974 was a big year in New Zealand with the coins and 2 dollars were issued, the Commonwealth games which was common and the more scarce 1974 NZ day coin There were 250,000 of the Commonwealth games one and NumisRob recalls it being available in 1973, whereas NZ day just 15,000 were minted. Proof sets had the games dollar in sterling silver, the first coin in silver for us since the 1949 Crown. The 3 lowest coins, these got a lot of abuse over the years. The 5 cents is a bit better. The coins of Samoa got a makeover in 1974, the stars and shields of 1967 got a fruity redesign! The 50 and 5 sene in high grade. These designs lasted until the 2000s. The 1 sene to 50 sene were circulation and a special crown sized Tala was released as a collectors coin. Also issued was this stunning Proof set in silver! This is beautiful! Close up of the silver tala and 50 sene!

1974 was the golden age of Bedroom soul and Funk, songs like Hang on in there baby, Rock your baby, Kung Fu fighting, Boogie Down, Rock the Boat and Pick up the pieces. Good Times and Soul Train were on TV, and the soulful natural (Afro) was the hairstyle of choice. I am going to get down and make it baby, by showing you these pieces, and no they will not be made into disco medallions on an open necked large lapelled silk shirt with circles on it. Belgian 1 Franc Cook Islands 5, 10 and 50 Tene, not the only ones doing the fruit on coins thing. Soviet Union 1 Kopeck, definitely not a place to pick up a Barry White album! Poland - 5 Zloty, like most communist nations - precious metal coins were bourgeois and coinage had to be cheap and functional like this. Indonesia 5 Rupiah, Family Planning - more cheap aluminium. Also the Global cause/programme was never far from 70s coinage. Algeria 5 santim - more budget aluminium!!! Ecuador - 1 Sucre
