I always thought that the red/brown designation was limited to coins that were in the AU-MS, with maybe a nice XF here and there.

I saw this coin with a VG-8 RB grade from NGC and did a double take. I would think that any coin under XF wouldn't have enough "Red Luster" still visible to warrant the RB in reference to the strike character.

I can see that the coin does have areas that are red on the reverse, but is this enough to raise the coin from BN or brown to RB or red/brown?

Here's a link to the coin at NGC. https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/5966024-001/8/

That's really bizarre. The reverse looks better than VG, and it does look like some original color there, but I don't see how it's possible to have that much wear and still maintain mint luster.

If a VG-8 cent says RB, it most likely was cleaned. VG-8 should have a nice chocolate brown color.

even if the coins color changed after it was slabbed a VG coin is not going to show any signs of red unless it was cleaned down to the copper. someone at NGC messed up on this one.

I think a coin only needs 5% red for a RB designation but I
don't even see that on that coin.

That's hysterical. The red copper color turns brown when handled and exposed to the elements. A VG coin would have been handled and rubbed in its entirety.

I'm guessing it was a mistake on the label or it may have been that graders first day on the job. I've looked at lots of graded coins, but this is the lowest grade I've seen come up with an RB.

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad I'm not going crazy(er)!
