#1 looks like an original unc with minor marks, fingerprint stain, and small scattered spots. Nice frosty luster on the devices. MS-63 with nice eye appeal.
#2 shows rub and slight wear on the obverse. Reverse shows little or no wear. The dark haloes around stars and letters suggest an old dipping and subsequent retoning. Overall eye appeal is somewhat impaired. I'll venture AU-55 for detail but it could net-grade lower.
Thank you for your kind responses. These two coins are offered by a high end dealer which seems to have a monopoly on ugly rare coins. They sell the highest end coins from what I have seen. The firm is run by well known dealer Steve Contursi. What shocked me is the grade that PCGS gave these two coins. They were given equal gem grades and was wondering whether you thought there was a way to reconcile the grades looking at the coins. I guess grading is subjective, but this seems a bridge too far...
Not sure how I "did you guys dirty." Just thought it was interesting how far apart my grading was from PCGS's. From the looks of it, those who contributed grades here differed from PCGS just like I did. Sometimes I find PCGS grading bizarre and interesting.
