Extremely rare coin. I am lucky enough to have one of these but have never found one myself. Very, very well done indeed.

Thanks Tropical! Is this worth getting slabbed even though it would be a details coin because of the verdigris? Love the coin, but so bummed it won't straight grade...

Congratulations. Very nice find.
Get some Verdi-Care on that soon to help minimize oxidation.

Should I, Pete? I posted about conserving the coin on the general forum, and jbuck pointed out that the black spot on the A could be a hole in the plating. I didn't get a clear answer on whether it would be better to VerdiCare it or not if that were the case...

Maybe a soak in acetone first if others agree?

I certainly would. I see "white-ish" areas on the coin that makes me think it has been in some kind of liquid (the environmental damage you noted).
Even though it is a "details" coin because of environmental issues, leaving it as it is will only allow more oxidation to occur.

If Badthad pops in he can add input since it (Veri-care) is his baby.

Congrats again on the find!

Thanks Pete! Also, any thoughts on whether it's worth getting stabbed despite being a details coin? Everyone is saying it's very rare, but it seems to be so rare the auction history is pretty scant, and I can't really figure out if it's worth enough to justify sending it off.

Without full coin pics there is no way to really comment on grade so generally pretty tough to answer questions about slabbing. However, this coin may be very rare but it's not high on many wish lists so doesn't hold too much value. At registry grade the price might go very high, but in circulated condition I would think it unlikely to go over $50 in or out of a slab. So not worth the dollars to slab it unless for personal reasons, which you may want to do anyway as few will ever find one of these and it would put a slab and label on yours.

Thanks Tropical! I may get it stabbed like you say just to commemorate my find! I'll try to post some pictures of the full coin later, since I could use more advice on what I should do to conserve it.

What causes varieties like this to be so rare? Were the dies caught and removed by the mint before many could be produced? Seems crazy that so many 1995 major DDOs could have been produced in such high numbers and something like this was limited to a handful!

The 1995 was an exception, since news of it was released while they were still in boxes at the banks and everyone went about searching for, and in many cases finding, uncirculated examples of DDO-001. But no one looked for die 2, and it is really quite rare, possibly only because it wasn't searched for by those droves of folks.

Otherwise, there are always dies that get pulled for one reason or another. Possibly this one for 1996 was pulled, but are you aware that there are at least 6 different known DDO's for 1996? Surely they weren't all pulled early, just rather hard to see at a glance and no one much looked for them.

Anyway, some coins are naturally rare for whatever reason, while other coins has a full run but just few of them have been found. Yet. It is this second part that makes the search worth doing, as there are just so many great coins yet to be pulled from the wild.

I have 6 of these now . It's possible they've become more common since the post . And yes I am a perfectionist. The whole thing from the Die scratches to the tail . I have 6 of these . No I do not sit and do nothing but roll hunt because I did not buy them . Very common today .

@jefferson1983 seems unlikely that you have 6 of these, but please do share. (Forgive my skepticism, but we see a LOT of people here who claim to have a dozen of a super rare variety with no pictures, and I can't think of a single time where such an outlandish claim has turned out to be true. Usually, it's a good sign you're making a mistake if you think you've found multiple of the same rare die variety).
