I'm waiting for the update on the scale/weight but it has the appearance of a tapered planchet to me as well.

I'm not sure how the field could be flattened out without doing quite a bit of damage to the rim. Maybe it is a little out of round so the diameter would be helpful as well.

Nice job eagle eyes on the scale discrepancy. I'm not seeing the weight reduced by almost 33% looking at the anomaly in these images (if it is tapered).

I dunno dude, these pics may not show what happened but there is damage all over this coin. We also know that the scale to the tenth is unreliable. The crease in the coin, out of round and lots of damage, to me adds up to just PSD and I always look for other reasons.

Well good to know- any recommendations on a new scale?

@makescents theres really zero damage to the rim (that would happen if this was just damage. i'll send some close ups tonight when I get home.

As for the damage on the rims, that could be anything, just messing with my bud, Pete. But I still think it's damage to the coin, given the other information I stated in the beginning. The crease in the coin is the clincher, in my opinion.

Have no clue what that first link is.... Not by me. I get this from time to time on here.

I'm not able to clean that up, it does not even show up if I go back. Not sure if a Mod can do anything with it but would be appreciated if possible.

I like being messed with. It means people are paying attention. LOL
Definitely quite a bit of damage, but ...

Maybe an image of the edge might help to show if the coin is on a flat plane or if it's ever so slightly bent up or down.

And of course, a scale that measures to the 100ths is always a good idea.

This cent was struck on a tapered planchet. Looks like it was struck in 1953 or 1955. 1955 was a peak year for such errors, with 1953 generating a respectable number.

Hmmmm. I give, Mike but really do wonder about the crease, it so looks like damage. Just coincidence? Do you see it?

Thanks for weighing in Mike. makecents, as far as damage, you got to figure this coin has circulated for up to 65 years. I've found tapered plan that are a straight line as this one is.

Why I questioned it, is because of the crease or raised area (can't tell for sure which it is), that looks like damage, like it was flattened and slightly bent. I have given to Mikes professional attribution. I am very familiar with circulated coins, that is what I generally search but not familiar with tapered planchets.

Great image of the edge showing how the thickness is reduced at the rim.

The nicks on the rim that MakesCents circled made me wonder but Mike's comment and the edge image confirm the tapered planchet.

It is definitely worth saving in a 2x2, but not really valuable enough to have slabbed.
(Probably in the $5-$10 range)
