In 1965 a new portrait of the Queen was introduced. The first new obverse had to be replaced because it gave such poor die life. The problem was caused by a flat field (Small Beads variety). A single trial die (Medium Beads) showed that a field sloping up to the edge was preferable so new master tools were prepared (Large Beads) and those dies became the standard. The 3 obverse varieties, plus the two reverses with slightly different 5's created a total of 5 varieties for 1965. The types are not classified in order they were struck, but by order of discovery. Chronological order is Type 1, 2, 5, 3, 4. The point/blunt in the 5 appears at the bottom of the 5

Type 1 Small Beads, Pointed 5

Type 2 Small Beads, Blunt 5

Type 3 Large Beads, Blunt 5

Type 4 Large Beads, Pointed 5

Type 5 Medium Beads, Pointed 5
