Here's the diagnostic for the 65 LB PT5 from Charest's book. This variety baffles me a bit because I've seen various points on the end of the 5, but if there's any consistency in the markers, there's a die chip on the pointed 5 that extends the stroke further towards the maple stem. You can just barely see it here.

So far, I haven't found any V4 (LBP5), but I do have a SBP5. Later today I'll post comparison pics.

KurtS, you are correct, and we have hashed this one before. The direction the "I" is pointing is so vague, as to be nearly worthless, unless one does some greater magnification, and overlays to verify. A pain in the neck, but it has to be done to be sure.

"Next question: What are the key dates (if any) for Canadian cents?"

Oh boy...there are a few, especially if one takes varieties into account!

Ok, here's a short list, starting in the 20th C.
1907H
1922
1923
1924
1925
1926, etc.
1936 dot (an extreme rarity)
1941-45 (in MS grades)
1947 ML Blunt 7
1949 "A to denticle"
1953 SF (in higher grades)
1954 NSF (PL)
1955 NSF (a true rarity)
1965 V4 (LBP5)
1985 Pointed 5
...and probably some I left out!

The list looks good to me Kurt. Pretty much all of the ones I would have listed, but now you saved me the trouble.

For those collecting, the small cents started in 1920, so the 1907H is a large cent.

Thanks for the list, Kurt
I do have another question if you don't mind.....
In your list you entered "1926, etc." and A to denticle" .
1926 meaning '27, '28,'29 ? Just wanting to clarified my understanding.

Thanks,

Hi Mila,
All I meant by that was a number of cents from 22-31 are somewhat "key" and valuable depending on the grade.
Regarding the 1949 "a to denticles" cent, there are two varieties that year also known as "high relief" and "low relief". The high relief variety is scarce, and here's the way to tell the coins apart:

This is what's meant by "A to denticle"

I have found a 1949 1c that has the A pointing to right edge of a dent. Is that high relief? Also what is the 85 pt5 worth in proof?

Panthercam--
Well...the best I can say is study these pics and decide If find it's really tough to describe the difference.
As for the 85 1c, neither my Charlton's or Charest give a value in PL or SP--can you post a pic? If that's from a PL set, it would be interesting to see.

KurtS,
I haven't found one, I was just wondering if they made them. What are the key proof sets/varieties I should look for?

Nice...next thing to find is the "blunt 7" variety for the '47 ML. I don't have a photo to share...I should take a pic of those I have

Panthercham, I'm not that knowledgeable about sets, but I do recall that some recent sets were found with "mule" coins, which is to say, the reverse of the coin wasn't correctly matched to the front. I seem to recall some Olympic coins with the wrong logo...I'm sure somebody has more info than me.

I forgot that I did that. Wasn't that nice of me? LOL

Nice pictures, though. Is that through a QX3/QX5? I've GOT to get me a microscope!
