Here's an interesting variety sent to me by another CC member, Andre1621--thanks so much for this interesting coin, very cool! There's an interesting set of die lines below the "1": And here's a diagram from Pierre Charest's book:

Very nice Kurt, high quality artwork and layout.
I checked my only two 1962 pennies: one is in MS-65 and the other is PL-65. I can see light traces of a harp with 10x mag lens on the MS coin. But there is NO WAY my scanner can pick this up like yours does.
Is this unique to 1962?

Thanks Marc! In this particular case, I used my Nikon D70S plus the 60mm macro lens which does a great job at details. Combined with a low angle light source, I was able to resolve these details--it wasn't easy!

Reminds me of this 1979 variety I found but never made it in the standard catalogs. I found dozens of them... all the way up to MS-65. I might bug the editor again this year... Marc

The harp is worth about $1, while the thread under the chin is worth $100! :-O

Still, the "harp" isn't a bad coin to have, but the guitar is worth slightly more. Harp MS63: $50, Guitar: $75 (Charest). Whatever the value of this coin, I find it very interesting!

Kurt, Do I detect at least one line going all the way down to the apex? I think I see at least one that does, and if so, it would indicatre to me that you have the "guitar", instead of the harp. It would be nice, in either case! Canadian_coins, what is the "thread under the chin" you refer to. I can't see anything out of the ordinary on the photo, so I thought I'd ask? I have at least one 1979, with a huge MD. I hang on those, (US and any other country I happen to find one). Dick

Dick, yes--one line completely spans the space between the "1" and the leaf. I wasn't entirely sure how accurate Charest's diagrams were, but you might be right about the "guitar" variety. Good call!

Marc, I think I have a different title for yoiur "thread". I have one that shows even more of the "DIE CLASH" that you seem to have nearly as roll of. the photo is bad, but I'll point out the spots to check. 1. the back of the neck,( lost in the gleare), 2, under the chin, as in your photo, 3 in the round area at the end og the "smile", 4, just a small spot under the nose, and 5 just a hint of a line that is just off the bridge of the nose. I think these marks are from the maple leafs impression in the clash:observe, If needed, or desired, I can make a series of photos of the indicated areas.I decided to bring them up, after all. The third one should not have come. Check that die chip in the eye! Dick

Hi Dick
Nice pics! Yes I have a whole slew of similar die errors - I have no time now to publish perhaps we should also start another thread... Yes the coin I displayed here is due to a die defect like yours but, to the naked eye it does really look like a metal thread. It shines just like one. For lack of better words...

Marc, that might be a good idea. You would have the "burden of proof", in that you seem to have gotten the main bulk of them. Mine slipped out, somehow, but it is definitely a die clash. It is not in Charlton's Catalohue, because I went thru the whole section on all types of errors, types, etc and there was no mention of a die clash. My book is the 2005 Ed. It would be interesting, too, to see the ""progression od the clash", as it makes the "run", before being replaced. Check yours to see if there is any indications on the obverse. mine has nothing. Your photo shows very little of the damage, whereas is quite extensive. This then could be what it takes to get it included in the catalogue. I dion't know if the 2008 CDROM has any mention. I have it, but have a great deal of trouble, trying to find anything there. I have almost given up. Super Dave, or whoever har the authority, if you would like to move thos to another topic, such as "Clashed dies", it would be quite appriopaite, and I believe by general support. Dick
