This coin is not in the best shape but I thought the little owl counterstamp was pretty interesting.

I believe the coin is Mysia,Pergamon Helmeted Head of Athena/Nike standing right with wreath and palm.

So far I haven't found where the counterstamp comes from or much about it.

Just a guess, but wouldn't it be from Athens?

That's a clear owl counterstamp! I found a similar one on a Mysia Pergamon coin

I have seen owls on a lot of coins besides Athens. The owl is often seen with Athena, other times by itself. I have even seen an owl counterstamp on an Athens owl tetradrachm.

I wonder who who could have done that?

Maybe it's some ancient analog to the masonic counter-stamps sometimes seen on modern cents, i.e. a cult of Athena or some other private group.

Coincidentally I was just reading that very page.

If I may I will quote Doug Smith for the answer to who may have carefully placed these countermarks. He has a nice example of an owl countermark on his page linked by DVcollector.

"countermarks are a field of Greek numismatics that will require decades of study to achieve even minimal understanding. Up to now most students have chosen easier and prettier subjects so the challenge here remains for a student willing to dedicate a lifetime of study. The few coins on this page are only a tiny sample of what exists ... and we didn't even mention Roman or Greek Imperial countermarks. This is no small challenge and the book that does justice to the subject will be very thick".

Thanks bobbyhelmet,

I'm on a tight budget and it's getting tighter ( "US economy is picking up" for who I don't know?) so my pick's are getting fewer and farther between.
It's good though, forcing me to be more careful and selective. This guy was US 11.50
