Hi,

I encountered this coin earlier this week and promised the original owner that I would check if it is a valuable variety.

I am sure other sites also exist to clarify in greater detail exactly what procedure to use to clarify what variety (if any) is showing.

NGC, however, has an excellent site to assist in initially identifying some of the foreign varieties along with the corresponding CURRENT ‘retail' prices.

Unfortunately, their accompanying photos oftentimes are absent about 30% of the time on this site: http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/Wo...e-Guide.aspx

NGC does do an excellent job accurately denoting the physical dimensions of foreign coins along with instantaneously calculating the melt values of coins containing precious metals based upon prevailing NYSE metals etc.

In this example I am still having difficulty deciphering the NGC verbiage to assist in correctly pointing out the specific variety (if any).

One of my several inquiries would be if the faint vertical line I photographed is even used in determining the existence of a variety.

I had to use a homemade adjustable iris with my USB camera positioned at about 30 degrees from horizontal to be able to contrast the border of this very faint vertical line since I am still unsure if my photograph would be considered to display a ‘raised' vertical line on the edge...?

It appears when looking at the obverse side (William Tell) that the edge-located ‘D' of ‘DOMINUS' is positioned at approximately 8 o'clock while the 'vertical line' in question is at 9 o'clock between words ‘DOMINUS' and ‘PROVIDEBIT'.

In summary please grade and state whether or not a valuable variety is shown per the positions of the letters, vertical line, and/ or ‘*'s located on the edge of the coin.

Thank you,

mdpmedia

And finally the last two .jpg files are screenshots of the NGC web site showing the 'retail' prices and some verbiage about the different varieties.

I have placed it here in two sections to enlarge the lettering while keeping within CCF file size limitations

Thanks,

mdpmedia

Hi,

Why and which of the three type I categories would this coin fall under?

What would be the grade considering the obverse gouge etc.?

Thanks,
mdpmedia

I would grade it as EF, the mark shouldn't devalue it too badly(10-20%). Reading the NGC description of the types, the edge lettering starts at the first star and the types vary by the order of the edge lettering. The first picture is not ideal but it appears to show the first star in the 6 o'clock position, you will have to confirm that with the coin in-hand. The second picture, NUS PROV, confirms Type 1 so it is the most common variety.

GT, Great to have you on board for many more posts like this. It's great to have something that detailed, but not always necessary if you just wanna give a thumbs up or thumbs down on a comment, for example
