inherited some silver proof, proof, and mint sets (1954 - 1990) from my father in 2008 He also had the first few years of Brown and Blue Ikes along with the 1986 3 Coin Statue of Liberty Centennial Set that included the $5 gold coin. I really took a liking to the Liberty commems. When my daughter was born in 1993, I started getting a proof & silver proof set each year, adding to Pop's collection. Fast forward 30 years: I filled in the gaps on the proof and silver proof sets, via ebay and through my own enrollments at USM, which included the 5oz ATB. . . Since I joined this community last year, my interest has largely been tracking down the Modern Commems that were issued when I took a hiatus from the hobby. I'm collecting them for the variety, the ties to historical events, and in some cases, their artwork, e.g., the 2016 Mark Twain dollar, which captures the mischief of its subject. As I've seen stated throughout the NCLT Forum, "collecting what you like" is the best advice.

I started collecting the modern commemoratives because I got a planchet for them, and wanted an example coin and I started to collect them.
@dsking, now I have Guns N' Roses "It's so Easy" stuck in my head!

In 2014 at a Houston coin show, I picked up a few classic silver commemoratives to add to my coin collection. A dealer I grew to know quite well had a nice display set up which caught my eye, and I really loved the designs on the ones I bought from him (an Oregon Trail, a Texas and Arkansas).
I started gradually adding a few more as I learned more about the commemorative series, and soon decided to build a type set.
Once that was completed, I started adding examples from different mints, and before long I was working on a complete set. I completed the set few years ago and now I'm doing upgrades. The fun never ends!

Can't remember when I started to collect comm dollars but the reason I did it was because of the variety of designs I have read that many people ask about dansco type albums for display and storage I use the CAPS Binders with blank pages so I can move them around if I want to Here is an old pic that shows one page

@Boba Debt I too have a similar album for my modern dollars but struggle with the curved coins to fit into the capsules provided with the albums. Have you found a solution?

I was told Air-Tite has a capsule for the Apollo Dollar and if they do I'm sure it would work for the Baseball coin

I enjoy the modern commemorative series for its variety. Adding a bunch of silver to my collection is a nice bonus. I first got into the series back in the early days of my collecting by purchasing whatever interested me from the Mint. My budget was much more limited then, and I regret not buying more. Now I've decided to tackle a type set of the modern silver dollars.
