Quote: But you're putting us on about the Lion and the Rat, right? Maybe it is a Bear? I missed the little snake too, DOH! I'm not that positive now after seeing the bear on your token Daltonista. You are correct, after a bit of digging I found this blurb in a book on "Heraldry in Bath" Quote: The supporters used were a lion and a bear which had even less authority than the shield. westcoin, if it's any consolation, I also thought it was a well fed rat.

Well two more Conder tokens showed up and were waiting for me in my postbox when I got home from work, I just love when that happens! Both are Peter Kempson halfpennies, one from Gloucestershire Dalton & Hamer #5 for my building and structures collection. This one has St. Michael's Church on the obverse and is a nice bronzed proof. (you should see the Coventry, St. Michaels Church token, which I just turned down last week, now I'm kicking myself I decided against the purchase, the really tough - "Warwichshire D&H-38a Penny" as I want a better condition one in the collection, now I'm not sure I'll ever find one). The second one is for my Warwickshire Coventry collection, this example has the Coventry Cross also a nice bronzed proof.

westcoin and ttkoo: Come on, guys! You aren't seeing snakes on that Bath Pump Room Conder...that's the lion's tail! Maybe my son was right when he told me hallucinogenic mushrooms are coming back into vogue!
I never pay too much for my tokens...but every now and then I may buy one a little too soon.

Yeah the snake comment had me going there, but after I looked again at the token it is most definitely the lion's tail and not a snake.

In my part of Australia we get magic mushies growing in the pine forests. Brown tops and blue-meanies as they are known. But we also get a ton of snakes and rats and not a lot of lions or bears so please forgive the error.

This weeks arrivals are similar and repeat the Coventry Cross theme I posted last time out, and adds an elephant from the seal of the Arms of Coventry on the other. Both are tokens put out by Robert Reynolds and feature Lady Godiva and her famous ride naked through the town of Coventry to oppose the taxes imposed by her husband Leofric Earl of Mercia. Godiva begged her husband Earl Leofric of Mercia, to stop a heavy tax on the people of Coventry. Leofric said he would do this if Godiva rode naked through Coventry. She covered herself with her long hair and rode through the streets. The townspeople stayed indoors and did not look at her. With the exception of one young lad named Tom, today known as "Peeping Tom" was the only person to break the no watching rule and was apparently struck blind for his indiscretion of gazing upon the naked Lady Godiva covered only by her long hair. Truth or Myth? It's a well told event over the years and part of the Coventry festival held every 7 or 8 years. There are over 40 variations of the Lady Godiva token and quite a few contemporary counterfeits were produced as well. I now have two of them.

Another new token arrived for the set of Coventry Gates I'm building. This one is Dalton & Hamer #272 Grey Friars Gate in a bronzed and very reflective bronzed proof state. I found this token very hard to get a good photo of I still need to do some work on my lighting due to the colors and reflectivity, to get a really good shot of this example. 1797 (as all Coventry Gate Halfpenny tokens are dated) by Peter Kempson. A nice 3D perspective engraved die on this token, almost as nice as the Spon End Gate token, but not quite, IMO. I added a second shot of the obverse to show what I mean about the difficulty of photographing this one, and a slight change in lighting the token takes on a completely different look.
