On the blunt 5 cent, the top line of the five comes to a squared blunt end. On the pointed 5 variety the top line comes to a pointed chisled end. The pointed 5 variety is the rarer of the two and catalogues for $30.00 in MS-63. I have seen dealers advertise brown circulated examples for $20-$25.00. I myself have found only 4 after searching rolls totalling about 250,000 coins. They are out there but are scarce.

Nice to know you've found a few. I keep all my 1965's and 1985's and one day will get around to checking them. Thanks for showing me there's hope in finding a pointed 5 one day.

Dang, I checked my folders and don't even have any 1985s, much less the common one.

Hi,

On eBay you can find some pointed 5 certified or not...
The price are good, depending on the grade

I think I just found one in the rolls I searched today. I must've gone through about 10000 pennies so far. If I could get my darn scanner to work with WinXP, I'd get a picture up here. I'll scan it at work tomorrow. Now if only it wasn't circulated, it might be worth a little something. I'm still keeping it though.

It looks as if the top bar of the '5' in the pointed variety is thinner. Does that sound right?

The top bar must come to a pointed (chiseled) end.

Yeah, that's what I think I found. I'll scan it tomorrow morning at work, if you don't mind checking back in on me, I'd appreciate it. Going from your pictures, it does appear that the top bar is thinner on the pointed 5. (In addition to the point).

Woohoo! thanks! Once you find one, it really does stand out as different. I'll let my son know, he'll be just as excited as I am.
