A couple of websites addressing the issue of forgeries of Roman coins that have come out of Bulgaria in recent years.

Hi everyone,

I continue to see the common Euboia Histaia tetrobol fake in the inventories of even honest dealers.

Please check your inventories if you are stocking coins of this type.

Barry P. Murphy alerted the industry to this some time ago. I corresponded with him well over a decade ago after I discovered I had acquired some of those fakes (as many reputable dealers and collectors had). I have only 2 authentic ones only in my collection and both have good provenance (one is from Barry P. Murphy, the other is ex BCD).

A good reminder for everyone to read his article. The style of the fakes is different to official issues. Once you've read the article below and looked at the photo you should be equipped to distinguish the authentic from the fake ones/

If someone wanted to add the other 72 of these coins that would be very nice. If you right click the photos at the website for the auction house selling them the photo comes out as only 50 kb so no real work required except some right clicking and pasting in text here. Here is the website below and the first of the 73 coins.

This one very nearly had me duped

There are apparently a number of this type that have been faked, thankfully the fakes are both die and flan shape matches to one another. See identical fake in this image:

I noticed that there are more sellers on eBay who sell Anglosaxon pennies, Merovingian & Anglosaxon sceatta's and Carolingian denari. Most of them are clearly fakes made out of pewter. Easy to see in most cases but sold for high prices to people who think it was a bargain. Is there a policy at eBay to ban this kind of scammers? Because they sell it as antiques

I only buy eBay coins that are corroded or holed etc. to make sure they are genuine.

An obvious modern replica I came across today. I know there's actually a market for such unconvincing reproductions, being sold to those who are numismatically unsophisticated, sometimes from necessity in jurisdictions where it's illegal to sell authentic ancients. But given that genuine bronze issues of Constantine are so available and generally inexpensive, it still bothers me that these worthless trinkets have a any sort of niche at all.

A friend who likes to buy ancients just sent me this eBay posting for an item. Of course no exact attribution (other than JC portrait denaruis & the wt at 3.86g). It's fixed price at around $750.
