Bumping this thread to remind folks that we are looking for coins minted in the decade of the 490s.

Maybe:

Anastasius AE4 nummus

Ascended to throne in 491, reformed the currency 498.

I'm not entirely sure:

1) While the follis and its fractions were introduced in 498, were these still made after the reform?

2) This CNG lot seems to have been from a hoard dating to the reign of Justinian, so it well could be a barbarous copy.

Unless someone has a dated Sassanian coin though, this is the best I got.

Sassanian empire
Zamasp (Jamasp), brother of Kavadh I
Deposed Kavadh and ruled 496-498

*mic drop*

The 480s won't be much easier, though.

This deserves some fruit

@jbuck, can you please adjust the title to reflect that we are now looking for a coin minted in the 480s AD? I agree that we may very well be stuck here for some time, but it will be nice to have a new title.

It's been four months since @finn got us moving again. While I can't post a coin from the 480s that would continue that progression, here is a third one from the 490s that at least continues to keep this thread on life support. It is another nummus of Anastasius (minted in Nicomedia between 491 and 498 AD).

@jbuck, the 5th century AD seems to be a bit of a wasteland when it comes to dating coins. I'm not giving up just yet, but I don't see us making it to the 300s.

I think our only hope for getting this thread moving again is if someone can find a coin of Sassanian king Balash:

https://www.cNGCoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=372798

I don't think there is a single other coin type that is firmly dateable to the 480s?
