You are correct that there is a D over S and an S over D and from what I see there is small premium on them. I guess that is what it is. This is just an ordinary 55d

Hi All!
GREAT to see a lot of you folks into nickels! I'll try to touch upon a few of the comments from the last few days. I don't have my spreadsheet of how many of each date I've found (believe it or not, I actually record all of my info on actual PAPER, not the computer!) but at the 4000 roll mark I had found 11 of them. Not too easy to find. 1955 Philadelphia is a tougher find (7 found at the 4000 roll mark), but the 1955d has the d/s variety. I've been meaning to post the photo, but I have an MS63 or so 1955d I found during this survey that I'm almost certain is a d/s. Have to post it so the experts can give their opinion! And, I've no real reason to keep pre 1959 nickels; they are all 50 years old, and there is a dealer in Arizona that pays $3.25 a roll for them. I'm getting reading to dump a TON on him! I've been concentrating on halves lately, but I will be back with more nickel updates in a day or two.

By the way, that 11 coins found comment in the last post was for 1946s nickels.

one more thing: I found a 1967 Nickel. It seems to be super shiny and have a deep cameo. It looks better than a new unc. 2007 Nickel. Have I found anything?

Sounds like one from a Special Mint Set. They were not cameo, but still "proof like" in appearance.

well, I worked another $100 tonight.....and only found 13 pre-60. On the bright side, three of these were war nickels, a 45p, a 43p, and a 42p

I've got 150 War Nickels !......sadly NONE of them found from circulation though !...(they were a gift from Dad)........but it certainly spurred me on to search rolls and keep and eye out for more of them.....sadly to no avail so far...
Pretty depressing when you search a massive amount of nickels and come up with nothing of any consequence.......haven't done that for awhile now since.
But you know, threads like this kinda DO keep the interest alive........it gives hope to the hopeless !

Hi '64S!
The FG was not added to the obverse until 1966, so all pre 1966 nickels have no FG under Jefferson's bust. I find quite a few super high quality early to mid 60's nickels (never with full steps, though), I'm really at a loss to figure out where they all come from.

1949 d/s, 1954 s/d, 1955 d/s, 1990d no "FG initials under Jefferson's bust.

I just happened to be rereading this post up to this point and found a major flaw! The initials under Jefferson's bust would be FS, NOT FG!!
