The current nickel-brass 500 yen coin (Japan) was first minted in the year 2000. This is a commemorative coin, from the Congo of all places.
There is a circular indentation that a 500 yen coin will fit into, if you don't mind scratching the coin... I put a coin on top of the capsule.

2006 Morgan dollar!

Finn235, I guess I'll be the first to point out that your year ranges are incorrect for the centuries. The century gets it name from the last year in the range, thus 2000 is the last year of the 20th century.

They get their name from the order in which they exist. The first century of the common era being years 1 to 100. With there not being a year zero, it just happens that the last year matches the name of the century.

Regardless of the details, you are correct, the ranges listed in the OP are not accurate. I can fix it if necessary.

I knew someone would call me out on that.

Feel free to change it, jbuck. I generally sort and consider coins based on the first two digits of the given date, e.g. grouping a 1900 coin with one from 1950, not 1850. But yes, if we are splitting hairs, the year 2000 was the last year of the 20th century due to there being no year zero.

Does it matter so terribly, given that our calendar is mis-calculated by no less than 4 years?

You know what, you are right. Your thread, your rules!

The timezones alone will have people posting Sunday morning coins on a Saturday night anyway.

This is meant to be fun. I will leave it alone.

Probably my favourite coin and one of the very few Royal Mint commemorative coins to have actually increased in value since I bought it:
