Society of Medalists (SOM) Special Issue Number 2 was SOM's 40th anniversary commemorative. [ MACO # 1970-151 ] Designed by Julian Hoke Harris and issued in 1970, this example came with the original shipping box and medal box, shown below.

The obverse pays tribute in miniature to the first SOM issue, Laura Gardin Fraser's 1930 depiction of a Ruffled Grouse, and the 80th issue, Boris Buzan's 1969 rendering of Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong's first step on the lunar surface.

Harrris's reverse design presents adjacent relief and intaglio versions of an Athenian owl, an olive sprig, and a crescent moon, imagery seen in coinage of ancient Greece, as detailed in a March 12, 2022, Coin Week article by Russell A. Augustin, linked below. The 40 border buttons on each side of the medal represent the 80 medals previously issued.

Mr. Harris' career and public works installations are discussed in a 2018 Arts Atlanta website article: https://www.artsatl.org/julian-hoke...eras-ideals/

90th Issue from the Society of Medalists, depicts ancient philosophers Lao-tzu and Confucius on the obverse, a river scene of the Yang-tze gorges in the style of traditional Chinese paintings on the reverse. Stanley Bleifeld created the 73mm Bronze in 1974.
