@thelionwarrior Sorry for such a delayed response, but I don't think either of those would qualify. One place to look first is the rim. On your two coins, a silvery color can be seen showing through which indicates that the dark color is only on the surface and has been worn away with circulation. That suggests some sort of environmental damage. I believe true Black Beauties are a consistent color all the way through. However, I haven't had the guts to cut one of mine in half to prove it! On a different note, I decided to send one of mine in to ANACS to be graded/attributed. It's the 1958 at the very beginning of this thread. I figure it will top out at MS-63, but I'm hoping to get it into one of their special Black Beauty-label slabs.

Hi Spruett. I'll still be away from home another three weeks or so, but if you send me a PM in late August as a reminder I can send you a pair of BU black beauties and you can cut one and do whatever to the other one to appease your curiosity. Just be sure to post the results here. Over the past few years I have had the opportunity to go through dozens of BU rolls from the black beauty years and have rather a lot of them. Sending you two to experiment with seems worthy, and since they are directly from BU rolls there is very little chance they have been tampered with.

The results are in! I have to say I'm pretty satisfied with the outcome.

I thought this was an improper annealment issue, not an alloy issue. You may have an error coin in an error holder.

Quote: I thought this was an improper annealment issue, not an alloy issue. I've seen both descriptions on ANACS slabs and I don't know when or why they changed it. As far as I know, there is no official consensus on the cause, but I personally believe the alloy mix theory.

Here's one of mine. I sent these images to Paul Hanan in Wisconsin. Paul is a Master Die Variety Examiner for CONECA. After an exchange or two, I shipped him the actual coin (just the Black Beauty, not the reference coin). I have others from other years, and I needed a good compass. Paul confirmed the authenticity of this one. It makes identifying the others a great deal easier for this novice. Kevin

I will let the experts decided if this is a black beauty, but fantastic example regardless!
