I wonder how many companies have paid big bucks for sealed boxes with the incorrect code?!

Ouch! I through from the beginning that was nonsense to care
which mint a silver eagle bullion coin came from.
Who would care on a non mint marked coin?

I agree. It does not matter to me.

Imagine the chaos if it was discovered that there was a way to determine which non-mint marked cents were ones minted in West Point or San Francisco instead of Philly.

I don't think it was the US mint that messed up "bigly" on this one. ;)

The mint is still whole in regard to original sells.

Well...
..the Mint said "boxes with this serial number came from this Mint"..
..based on that info interested parties with the box with that number had them certified as being from that Mint...
..the Mint then says "Well, those numbers we gave out actually were not from that Mint"

Sounds like erroneous info was given out and people acted on that info...I would vote "bigly" for the Mint

I agree the information released by the Mint was erroneous. It led to many dubious paper labels getting injected into the coin market.

Plenty of mistakes were made by all involved, the mint, the label makers, and the buyers.

I feel that the grading companies and the dealers were splitting hairs with this, as to many of us these coins are nothing more than bullion. They took a gamble and those who purchased them took a leap of faith. The aftermath of this is not going to be pretty. There are now thousands of bullion coins in very expensive slabs and lots and lots of money lost.

Not that I disbelieve you, but I did not see any articles where the mint changed their mind about the box bands. That said, this looks like a mess.
