In honor of the canonization of Pope John Paul II (JPII), the Royal Canadian Mint (R C M) issued a silver $10 commemorative coin in 2014. Pope JPII was canonized as Saint John Paul II on April 27, 2014 in a ceremony led by Pope Francis; it took place just over nine years after his death. Pope John Paul II praying over the Eucharist while celebrating Mass during his 1984 visit to Canada is depicted in the foreground on the coin's commemorative reverse design. Repeating multilingual text "CANONIZATION 04.27.2014 - CANONISATION 27.04.2014 - KANONIZACJA 27.04.2014 - KANONIZACION 27.04.2104" is presented in the background. The text is presented in English, French, Polish and Spanish - the four languages central to the story of JPII's elevation to sainthood. JPII's signature is seen on a panel to the left (viewer's perspective) of his upraised arms. 2014 John Paul II Canonization $10 Silver Coin

Following his death on April 2, 2005, the Royal Canadian Mint honored the life and accomplishments of Pope John Paul II, leader of the Roman Catholic Church - and his strong relationship with Canada - with a silver $10 commemorative coin. The coin was struck as a proof on a 0.9999 fine silver planchet with a diameter of 36.07 millimeters (mm) and a weight of 25.175 grams - Canada's standard 36 mm silver dollar planchet of the time (though used here for a $10 coin). The commemorative reverse depicts a front-facing John Paul II with his right hand raised in the midst of providing a blessing while his left hand holds a cross bearing a figure of Jesus. The coin's obverse bears the standard, right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Susana Blunt along with all of the coin's needed inscriptions. 2005 Pope John Paul II Silver $10 For more about the coin: - 2005 Pope John Paul II Silver $10 CoinFor more of my topics on commemorative coins and medals, including more on Canadian commemorative coins, see: Commems Collection.
