France was very slow in issuing commemorative coins, but once they started in 1982, they never looked back! This 1983 10-framc coin was issued for the bicentenary of the birth of one of France's greatest writers. Famous for his 1830 novel 'Le Rouge et Le Noir' (The Red & The Black), he was baptised Marie-Henri Beyle but used the pen name Stendhal. He served in Napoleon's army and later as French Consul in Italy, hence the vignettes of St Peter's in Rome and Milan Cathedral on the reverse of the coin. This coin has a mintage of 2,934,400. I got mine from the Monnaie de Paris for face value in 1983, and never remember seeing one in circulation. Together with the regular 'Mathieu' 10-franc coin, it was demonetised in 1991, as many forgeries of the regular coin had entered circulation, and people were also using lower-value foreign coins, such as the Iranian 50 rials, in slot machines. Some machines would even accept a British 2p (worth one-fiftieth of 10 francs) as a 10-franc coin!

Re: Mt Rushmore Quote: I have this one in the 1991 Prestige Proof Set. Me too, but mine is a cloudy peripheral rainbow toned coin in the prestige set. So is my 1993 Madison. I hope they continue to tone. Haven't dug em out for awhile to see if they got cloudier or better toned. I'll have to look.

My 1991 Prestige set is probably the only one that has not toned. It is the last one I got and it was after I moved out of the house, so location might mean something (my father smoked, we always used a fireplace, and the house was open a lot during the nice times of the year).
