I was horrified to see that my photos taken with my camera's phone had embedded my home's GPS coordinates into the pictures I had uploaded to Google Drive. Fortunately, every image I've posted to to this site and others have stripped the EXIF data and the GPS info, so that was a relief. But if you use your phone to conduct numismatic business or anything else that involves valuables or staying safe, be sure to check your camera settings and make sure location data (GPS) is turned off. The camera settings are not related to the phone's general location data settings, which is used by apps on your phone (such as google maps) to tell your phone what businesses and such are close to you etc.

Stay safe,

TRS

Thanks for the tip. I double-checked my phone (I turn off as much as I can -- saves the battery and my privacy to some extent), all okay here.

Okay here, too. I disable all location services for all apps unless absolutely necessary. Actual GPS is a definite battery-drainer.

If I can see the pic, I know where I took it.

I don't think my cell phone has GPS.
And I DEFINITELY wouldn't use it to take pictures.
I wouldn't know how to download them.

I am so glad that the CCF image optimizer strips all location metadata from its resized image!

Not quite. Many cameras also have built-in GPS for adding location data to images. I found this list (probably not complete) of cameras that have geotagging capabilities. Many require an external add-on but many have built-in GPS:
