What happened to the nickel on the right? Why does it have a matte finish?

The nickel I believe is environmental damage.ie bottom of a cup holder filled with soda. The cent might be a faulty planchet or a lamination error. Wait for people that know what they are talking about. I'm still pretty new to this as well!

The nickel looks like damage on the edge. It may has suffered a beating or an alteration the defaced it.
Cent looks like some water was on it causing the green color. Looks like the obverse was damaged. Note the alteration affected the rim. But how it was done, I guess it doesn't really matter, it is not a mint error. PSD.
