We all know that, almost since their first use, star replacement notes have their own separate numbering system and are printed in advance for use when regular production begins.

Question - when regular production ends, what happens to left over star notes that were not needed? Destroyed, I assume?

Good question Mr.Frog.

This question came up on a different PM forum, and a very reliable source said they were used in the next series.
The BEP is unable to predict exactly how many star notes they will need, so this happens almost every time a series changes.

Makes sense for today's singular FRN issues with only a few districts printing stars. I guess my question really relates to the wild west era of large and small notes with multiple color seals when, in many cases, there was no "next series".
