This has probably been asked before, but I just searched for graded 2017-P LSCs on eBay and saw that PCGS and NGC slab them with the reverse front-facing. Looking at older Shields, I see that ANACS also did that (but not with 2017-P's).

I have no idea why they would do that. On top of that, wouldn't the P mintmark be the most notable feature and worthy of facing the front?

I have reversed some of the coins in my albums, but there's an implicit reason. For the 50 States quarters, it's obvious: every coin is different. For the 2009 cents, the varying reverse designs make sense for a reverse-forward presentation.

The Shield cent has been around for over eight years now. I would rather see Lincoln's portrait facing me if I got one slabbed.

Any thoughts?

I'd rather watch monkeys in cages than look at a slabbed big joke Shield cent to begin with. Stinkin zinkins were the first downfall of the series, but when the mint decided to be an RCM clone and put out collector trash and go to changing designs to something like that, my interest stopped at 2009. That goes for ALL US coins. Last coin I'll ever check for an error is a Shield cent...well, is there one that doesn't have an error?. Maybe that's why slabbed Shield coins ARE important, not many good 'uns!

Is there an answer in there somewhere?

Because that's how they did those or the submitter requested they be slabbed shield facing forward. The Shield is what differentiates it from the other 100 years of Lincoln on the front so I can see what they're thinking with those, but there's no scientific answer. Submitters can have either side of the coin slabbed facing front

I know you can request orientation from NGC. Not sure on PCGS.

It really wouldn't bother me, but I do understand your frustration.

It was just odd that every single coin I saw was oriented this way. Oh well, I'm not interested in buying a slabbed Shield cent anyway.

Thanks for the replies!

That is certainly plausible if they were all from the same seller. Go to eBay and search "2017 P cent" and filter the results to only include PCGS, NGC and ANACS graded coins.

Every single PCGS and NGC coin is reverse-facing. Even when you add "sold" to the filter, it's the same thing and this involves multiple sellers. The only coins obverse-facing are from ANACS.

Either all of these sellers had the same idea or the TPGs did it by default.

I can understand it for 2010 cents as that was the first year for the Shield reverse, but 2017-P? It just doesn't make sense to me.

Now I wonder if they just forgot to change back in 2011. Someone forgot to send the memo.

You'd think they'd want to showcase that new "P" mint mark!
