If genuine, I believe this is from the Tang Dynasty, possibly a Qian Yuan Zhong Bao, and dates to the 8th Century AD. If so, it'll be my oldest example of the genre.

It was mixed in with a bunch of world coins that also included some late Roman bronzes. Just under 25 mm in diameter.

Edit: I hasten to add that my "dark ages" reference should only be taken as applying to the state of civilization in Europe at the time. I recognize that in contemporary China, culture was in full bloom.

@LC, based on my Hartill, this looks like it can be attributed as #14.116 (crescent below on rev). It was issued under the rule of Emperor Su Zong and dates to between 759 and 762 AD. As long as it is real (and I'm not saying that it isn't), seems like you got a sweet addition to your collection!

the wear in the hole sure looks right, being on a cord for many years. That's a bit hard to really mimic well.

A bit more online research this evening confirms my original tentative identification and the additional details posted by Spence above. The size absolutely corresponds to the 1 cash denomination. Apparently this is such a common coin that even in high grade they're still only worth a few dollars. But I'm still quite happy to have come across it.
