@nickelsearcher I've seen your lowball sets and they're an impressive sight to behold. Did you ever get a chance to interact with Elbesaar?

The challenge of looking through thousands of coins to find the PO1 needle in the haystack vs FR2 must take patience and perseverance.

When I think of 1898 and Mike Hayes, I remember his 1898 O VF30 that he had submitted to NGC as one of the possible/or mythical "micro-O" ultra-rarities mentioned by Beistle, and also Breen and Feigenbaum aka David Lawrence. There are quite a few 1892 micro O's found and still being found. I know Barber collectors who have and continue to look at EVERY SINGLE 1898 Barber half dollar listed on eBay. Mike's coin was at NGC for 6 months before they decided that it was not a micro O specimen, though the MM seemed to be different.

I will link the thread on CU that also includes the hype around a well-known mid-grade Barber half expert, who had allegedly cherry picked one of these unicorns, only to discover it was a counterfeit. The O mint mark 'fell off' in the safe deposit box: lol or tears. The Barber community (almost) unanimously rallied around him in the loss.

So instead of posting some more F12-XF45 midgrade circ cameos or two-toners, here is a link to that thread which you can see Mike's coin still present if you scroll down, and I will post Cratylus's coin photo here. Looks very credible.

edit: so links to CU are not allowed - if interested in a great chapter in modern Barber Half history: Google "1898 micro O Barber Half" and the first hit is the thread from CU a little over 10 years ago.

Here is the unicorn everyone buzzed about for several years before the owner emerged from hibernation to explain the "tragedy," and why he never let Mike or other Barber aficionados get a look at this amazing find!

Sweet dreams
