If I knew things were going south, I'd pick up a few cartons of cigarettes. I don't smoke, but I think I could get some good deals selling cigarettes to withdrawing nicotine addicts.

That and cheap booze, to be sold to alcohol addicts. And coffee, for caffeine addicts...man I have a list a mile long. Then again, if things get that bad and it is known that you have a stash, you'd need a good defense plan if you value your life.

I forgot about caffeine! Anyone want to trade for a 6-pack of Diet Coke?

Even though we move towards more secure, improved ways of payment, I feel cash is here to stay. The role may go minimal but cash isn't going away, it will always remain one method of payment.

What about fear of a pandemic? Much of China's routine transaction have already switched to QR codes, and the fear of handling banknotes is likely to accelerate.

Although the coronavirus is only showing up in Italy which is a traditional cash -oriented society, it could spread to Scandinavia. Sweden is circulating only 20 banknotes and 64 coins per inhabitant, and while there may be no official government reaction, people may simply stop using cash entirely as a defense against contamination.

Considering everything else people touch, I'm skeptical this would have much impact. Even so, it would be a temporary measure.

Paper money can reportedly carry more germs than a household toilet. And bills are a hospitable environment for gross microbes: viruses and bacteria can live on most surfaces for about 48 hours, but paper money can reportedly transport a live flu virus for up to 17 days.

For countries like Sweden and Norway who are already almost cashless, it might not be a temporary measure.

Dirty banknotes may spread coronavirus - use contactless instead, World Health Organisation warns

Health officials have long warned that banknotes would be a significant factor in spreading flu viruses.

Cash is king at places like Garage/yard sales, estate sales, gun shows, coin shows, camera shows, knife shows, computer shows, drug deals, individual car sales and although I hate to say it, most criminals. Then there is those kids that shovel snow, mow your lawns, etc. Ever try to give a kid an allowance with a check or credit card? If you look around, there are so many places that only cash works.

You obviously haven't tried to give a kid money lately.

They all have payment apps on their phones.

Clearly, anti-cash groups have infiltrated the WHO.
Card terminals are or can be a ''great place'' to spread a virus too. I would say they are even worse than banknotes because everyone touches them when paying.

Card terminals, like any other hard surface, can be wiped. The virus lives in the banknotes for over two weeks.

I could see some societies like Sweden, Denmark and Norway who are very close to cashless being pushed over the edge by this virus scare.
