1880 Charles. W. Hamill & Co., Baltimore, Maryland, Miller-MD-67 / Rulau-Md-Ba-46 / Schenkman-MD-60-H15, Wright-417, Silvered White Metal, 28mm Diameter, Non holed, Rarity-4

Struck for and distributed at the Baltimore 150th anniversary celebration Charles W. Hamill & Company was among the most successful firms in the city as manufacturers of silver plated ware and fine metal work. These tokens are usually always seen holed for suspension and in really low abused condition. If you look at the obverse you can see a small guide circle for tapping at 12 o'clock right between CO. & MF. as this is part of the obverse die design. This is one of only four respectable examples I've seen and none in uncirculated condition even if holed. On this example a significant amount of silvering is intact and it has eye appealing pull-away patina. They are all seen with minor rim bumping. This is an extremely popular pictorial token which features the newly introduced circulation silver dollar design by George T. Morgan. These were struck by German born die-sinker Francis X. Kohler who was a medalist in Baltimore from 1851 until his death in 1886.

Note: The following is from the 1907 Volume XX of The Numismatist: An Illustrated Monthly devoted to the Science of Numismatics. Geo. F Heath, M.D. Monroe, Mich.

Obv. "Chas. W. Hamill & Co., Mf. Silver Plated Ware." A female head almost identical with that on the last type of the U.S. silver dollar. Below, in very small letters, "F.X. Kohler." Rev. "150th Anniversary Baltimore City." In the center, the Baltimore Battle Monument. Below, "October 1880." White metal and gilded. Size 28.

The firm of Chas. W. Hamill & Co. was formed in 1876, and was composed of Mr. Hamill and S.J.S. Trayhern, being located at 30 North Holliday street. The firm was short-lived, however, owing to a disagreement, and the court was asked to wind up the company's affairs in 1878. Mr. Hamill purchased the plant, and on January 1, 1879, resumed business at the southwest corner of German and South streets, with James H.F. Hiser as his partner. In 1881 the firm removed to German and Calvert streets, where it was located until the business was discontinued a few years ago. This card was struck as a souvenir of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the city, October 11-16, 1880, and after several hundred had been sold at 25 cents each the further issue was stopped by the Government officials on account of the close resemblance of the obverse to that of the current silver dollar. With the understanding that the remainder of the issue would be gilded, the firm was permitted to continue their sale, which had proved a very remunerative venture.
