One of the first coins I owned was an antoninianus of Probus
Emperor on horseback slaying some unfortunate fellow
I bought it for a few dollars away back in 1977
My brother (MARCVS OBLIVIVS) told me he could "fix" it ie remove the crud on it
When he brought it back I was horrified
He not only removed the crud but most of the patina as well
Well I was young but not as dumb as I looked back then
I swallowed hard and thanked him for his efforts ......

I think I may leave this one well enough alone
Gives it a venerable look

Emperor Probus (AD 278-82) Billon Antoninianus
Obv. IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG
Helmeted radiate and cuirassed bust of Probus left
holding spear over right shoulder and shield on left
Rv. VIRTVS PROBI AVG
Probus on horseback right slaying some unfortunate fellow beneath KAΔ in exergue
Serdica mint
3.98 grams 22-3mm
RIC 877 D

Lots of bronzes of Probus seemed to have survived in reasonably nice condition.
This one even better than most of the survivors.
Really nice coin.

It still looks silvered, unless that's the photograph. Very attractive and an example I haven't seen. Thanks for sharing!

I agree and would add that this is one of them.

Still undecided whether to give it a quicky bath to remove some of the crud
But haste makes waste
So I have relegated it to my "maņana" tray for now

Tomorrow I may try something out and also do a re-shoot
In my enthusiasm I balanced the legend out making the reverse a bit crooked
With the mint mark properly placed it is very much an action still
The unfortunate fellow is not only about to be skewered by the emperor but he has just had some dental work done by his trusty steed with his shield flying forwards and his body hurtling backwards
Veeeery beautiful ........

Well whats done is done .....
I "improved" it a bit with a quick bath

Better rotation on the reverse too
Shows more of the moment
