I'm 40 now and my Grandfather died when I was about 10, he was 65. And all my life I've always heard the story of how my Grandfather's coin collection was stolen sometime during the mid seventies. It was not only his collection but the collection his father has passed down to him. His father had actually died in his arms when my grandfather was 15 and his father was 40. Went for a swim on the Biloxi beach and he died when the got back to the sand, heart attack.

My grandfather and Grandmother had gone out of town and when they returned something seemed wrong. The house had been broken into and the only thing missing was my Grandfather's coin collection. Seemed obvious that it was someone that knew not only about the collection but that they were going out of town. Needless to say it was never recovered.

Fast forward to the Summer of 2018. My Cousin is a retired Biloxi Police Officer and was at a reunion party. Someone there was talking about how a cop back in the seventies had paid a couple of guys to steal a coin collection from his neighbor. So yes, my Grandfather's neighbor was a cop and he always let him know when he was going out of town to keep an eye on the place. Sad to think of the betrayal not only from a neighbor but a police officer.

Guess my point is; don't trust anyone and keep your money buried in the backyard. Everyone is out to get you.
Rest in Peace

Probably rather difficult to do, was thirty years ago and all you have so far is second hand hearsay evidence.

Cold case. I get really angry about thieves. If you don't pursue this legally I hope God punishes him according.

Horrible. So very sorry. My inner Tony Soprano says it'd be a shame if something bad was to happen to the original neighbor. If he's still alive. But that's not how to live your life.

If you could track down the original neighbor, again if still alive, you could confront him, tell him word on the street in the Biloxi PD is that he stole your grandparents coin collection and you know about it. Maybe he would want to right an old wrong and return it. Unlikely, but people change as they age.

Finally, you could let it go. At least now you have some closure on what happened to it.

That thief deserves everything that happens to bad cops when they go to prison. Everything. Shame it is not going to happen.

The neighbor has been long dead. I believe he was older than my grandfather at the time and my Mom told he he had had polio when he was a child. They usually don't live long lives.
I've asked my Mom and her sisters and brother about the collection but they weren't into collecting so they don't know any specifics. My Mom says it was pretty extensive but who really knows. But it is a shame it happened. I guess there is some peace with my family they found out who did it but not much.

Very interesting story. Its a real bummer. My grandfather had a collection stolen as well. They think it happened when they moved houses (many, many moons ago). It always makes me wonder what he had.

If that is not a story which boils everyone's blood here, I don't know what is.

The first thing one would think is "statute of limitation". This does not apply to murder and other serious, felony crimes like murder, grand theft, burglary, etc. I don't know the policy in your state. Could it hurt to check with your local p.d. or sheriff's office? If you do, make sure you make an appointment to speak with a DETECTIVE at the agency. It is way too easy to blow someone off on the phone by the beat cop.

Another thing... the statue of limitations, I believe, depends on what state you are in. In some states, it applies from the year of the crime IF REPORTED AT THAT TIME. In other states, the statute applies after a number of years after the crime, WHETHER IT WAS REPORTED OR NOT AT THE TIME.

However, I believe that in some states the actual statue of limitations begins WHEN YOU FIRST REPORT THE CRIME. NOMATTER WHEN IT OCCURRED, OR WITHIN, SAY, THE LAST 30 YEARS. In this case, you might stand a chance.

If I am understanding the facts correctly, It can't hurt to try. check this, off the internet (I know, the internet is certainly not gospel).

The statute of limitations may begin when the harmful event, such as fraud or injury, occurs or when it is discovered. The US Supreme Court has described the "standard rule" of when the time begins as "when the plaintiff has a complete and present cause of action.".

and this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statu..._limitations

best of luck to you, let us know if there is any progress. I am a retired cop myself and there is nobody I hate more than a bad cop, I've seen my share of them over a 24 year period.

lets say you or a detective, private or otherwise, manages to dig up something, but not enough for a d.a. to file charges on. If your state's statue of limitation begins WHEN IT IS NOT ONLY WHEN JUST DISCOVERED, BUT REPORTED, there may be a chance. It's a slim one tho and I do not wish to give you false hope.

I could suggest taking the matter into your own hands but I got banned from this board once and do not wish to repeat the experience. Please, if any updates, let us know.

sorry, missed the part that the guy was dead. I wonder what became of the coins? If he did not live alone, it could be that he told someone in him home what he did and since he died young the coins could be buried underneath the floorboards, but this is movie world thinking. If the guy was living with someone at the time, and they are still alive or available (wife, kids) I would ask him or her just to satisfy my curiosity and sense of justice. but then again, maybe its not such a hot idea.

still does suck bigtime tho.
