This little coin is just slightly out of my collecting focus... I picked it up just to round off the story of the Venetian Grosso and Ducat, During this part of the 14th century Silver sources in Europe were"drying up" While gold discoveries and subsequent exploitation saw a huge influx of that metal. The result of this was the silver price increased. The Venetian Grosso's (96.5 % silver)purchasing power became greater than its face value... with the result people took it out of circulation. to Protect the Grosso the Venetians issued two new coins the Mezzo-grosso ( Mezzanino 78% silver) and the Soldino (67%silver 17.5mm) weighing 1.01 grams. The Grosso was allowed to float while soldino was fixed at 1/20 lire. The Soldino was supposed to be a coin internal to Venice, but I have read reports of it being exported to England in large numbers ( I guess silver is silver)

Edit: this was the era that Hungary Genoa and other European states started producing more attractive Florin sized gold pieces

Lovely toning brings out the detail of the nice looking coin. I've been wanting to get into Venetian coinage but they tend to be expensive.

Though if it weren't for the mane, I'd swear that was a monkey holding the standard on the reverse.
