Getting an example from a type that covers a long range of dates poses opportunity and challenges. I can get a common date in a better grade or potentially get a rarer date in similar condition for more money, of course. For example, a common date large cent might cost $175 in AU58 but a much smaller mintage date might cost $400 or more for an AU55. Both look like excellent examples. One obviously more rare than the other. If I go with the lower cost, then the money difference can fund another type coin.

Doing some more searching and I can find MS63 or MS64 examples of common dates for about the same price as the rarer variety. Clearly, the MS64 looks way better than the rarer variety. So, if the goal is best example I can afford, the MS64 seems to better fit that objective. Thoughts?

It looks gorgeous! I like type sets because of all the variety; you get to pick up one of everything instead of just a bunch of different dates/mint marks of the same coin. Been a while since I added anything to mine, but who knows, I might get back at it some day.

You are rocketing through this project. Have you kept a record of what you have spent so far? Do you have a monthly budget, or is this a "wherever it costs" project?

Here's mine (which has been added to since), but at 76% complete NGC made the business decision that it would no longer allow collectors to record non-NGC graded coins on the NGC Registry.

It's been opportunistic coin by coin so far trying to maximize the grade without spending a fortune. Most of my acquisitions so far have been <$500 each. The last one was quite a bit more at $1150.
