I recently picked up this Drachm of Kavad I, but am a little confused (as usual) about the attribution. I can make out the mint mark for Meshan, but am less sure on the date. It looks mostly like regnal year 40 (ehl'), but is missing the vaguely S-shaped digit between the backwards L character and the squiggly lower-case N thingamabob.

Also, it was previously described as coming from Kavid I's first emission of coins, but the ribbons on the crown and the crescent/stars at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock on the obv suggest to me that it actually is from his second emission. I suppose that nailing down the regnal year would answer that question. It was listed as Göbl-I 185.

Thoughts? Corrections? Thanks!

Dave as you know I collect this series, but sometimes trying to figure out the mint and date are enough to drive me batty. Luckily I have the books from the the National museum of Iran. Your coin has the mint mark of ML and dated to the 40th year. Listed as Kavad #523, Gobl 1971 III/2 2nd reign.

Gbl III/2; pl. 11, 185. Obverse III has the 2nd crown with streamers, a star either side of the crown, a crescent on each shoulder and star-in-crescent in the margin at 3h, 6h and 9h. Reverse 2 has a double border rather than single border (reverse 1). The date seems to be spelled hl which, if you look at Tom Mallon's chart, is the way the "40" component is spelled when combined with a digit. According to Gbl, the III/2 combination was used years 33 through 43. Going again by the Mallon charts, I think I would read the mint as MY (Meshan) rather than ML (Merv). However if more recent works such as the Iran sylloge read ML, I would go that way.

Ok thanks guys--I really appreciate the confirmation and additional information. I had been hoping that it was from Kavad's first emission, but all signs are pointing otherwise. Thx!
