Been a while since I'm posted any new acquisitions, so here is a silver Pfennig minted in Vienna for Friedrich II. The rev legend is +IMPATOR surrounding the letter F. It can be dated to his reign (AD 1230 to 1246) and is attributed as Szego 48a. Interestingly, of the 19 or so Pfennig designs issued by Friedrich II, only two have inscriptions (including this one).

Congrats on the latest medieval pickup, Dave. Interesting one, especially given the inclusion of the legend.

Thx Bob. I've been pretty focused on the letter A for a little while now and was hoping that this letter would be a little more prominent on this coin.

Congrats on the addition Spence...

Is this coin rare as I'm struggling to find other examples?

Thx! Unfortunately, Szego doesn't list rarities. In a quick interwebs search, I'm not finding another example of this specific variety, but of course silver pfennige of Friedrich II are readily available in general.

Nice acquisition! I am curious if the angular edges mean it was clipped, or just reflect the process used in this region (I am thinking of those perfectly round Hungarian denars of EdieDiz from the same time)

@tdz, the weight is correct on this piece, so I'm thinking that these were trimmed to the correct weight at the mint.
